UTAH ? A high school student was tackled at a school pep rally in reaction to his article published in the school's student newspaper earlier this month.Now the student wants the principal to address the situation with the student body, but the superintendent has said no plans to do so are in the works.In his column, Jeremy Brinkerhoff, a senior at Bear River High School in Tremonton, addressed stereotypes and cliques that exist at school.

Principal restricts distribution of paper to school grounds

VIRGINIA ? The Middlesex County School Board has affirmed a high school principal?s decision to halt the distribution of the student newspaper off school grounds.Principal David Bridges asked the board in August to support his decision to stop inserting the Big Blue Review, the student newspaper for Middlesex High School, in a local paper.

Murray State forms editorial review board for TV station

KENTUCKY ? Administrators at Murray State University last week instituted an editorial review board for a student-run access television station after the broadcast of an animated cartoon that one college official called racist.The new written guidelines for the two-week-old station, TV-11, require that an editorial board made up of 12 students must review all editorial, opinion and entertainment-based programming at least 48 hours before its scheduled air time, said Jeanne Scafella, chairperson of the Journalism and Mass Communications Department.

Middle school paper withheld for printing political ads

SOUTH CAROLINA ? A school superintendent held up distribution of a middle school newspaper, citing a district policy that prohibits printing commercial, political or religious advertisements in school newspapers.The first issue of The Chief?s Chronicle, the new student newspaper at Gaffney Middle School, contained three political advertisements purchased by candidates in the upcoming Cherokee County school board elections.

Illinois State free-expression policy struck down

ILLINOIS ? Illinois State University students and faculty joined together last week in a successful bid to strike down a proposed free-expression policy that opponents say could have severely limited free-speech on campus.The Freedom of Expression Policy, a brainchild of the college's academic senate proposed limiting speech on campus in ways never before addressed by administrators.The proposed policy, however, was struck down after 1,500 students, faculty and staff voiced their opposition by presenting a petition to the senate during a scheduled debate of the issue.

Court rules school district must release records promptly

OHIO — The Ohio Supreme Court has ruled that the Worthington City School District must provide requested records in a timely manner in the future.

This Week Worthington, a Columbus-area weekly newspaper, had sued the district after the school board delayed six days before providing a reporter all the resumes of candidates for treasurer.
