Welcome to SPLC’s legal hotline! Our attorneys are committed to helping you with your student-media-related legal questions and concerns. There are generally two ways to contact the hotline: schedule a call with our attorneys or fill out our hotline form.
If you are not a student journalist, adviser or someone working directly with student media on a media law issue, please do not use our hotline as we will not be able to assist you.
Option 1: Schedule a phone call
Set up a free telephone consultation (up to 30 minutes) with SPLC Senior Legal Counsel Mike Hiestand (Tuesday-Fridays) or Staff Attorney Sommer Ingram Dean (Mondays) by clicking on the button below. Appointments must be scheduled at least 16 hours in advance.
Option 2: Fill out the form
If you’re a student journalist or assisting student journalists and have a media law-related concern, fill out this form as completely as possible. We need this basic information to accurately answer your questions.
Upon submission, this form goes to the SPLC legal team. We respond as quickly as possible, usually within 3 business days.
In an emergency, call us at (202) 785-5450 during normal business hours, Monday-Friday, Eastern Time.
We encourage you to use a personal computer or phone to submit your request. Messages sent from an account or computer affiliated with a school or workplace are often not private and, in the case of public employee email, may be subject to disclosure under a state’s open records law.
