March 21 marked the sixth anniversary of Washington’s New Voices law, but a new investigation by the Student Press Law Center finds that many of the state’s school districts still do not have fully compliant student media policies required by the law.
On March 13, student journalists and other supporters of student press freedom testified in the Minnesota Legislature in support of HR 4083 and SF 3998, companion bills that would protect press freedom in the state's school-sponsored media.
On February 28, student journalists and other supporters of student press freedom testified in the Missouri Senate Progress and Development Committee in support of SB1099, which would establish the Cronkite New Voices Act to protect freedom of the press in school-sponsored media. The Wisconsin Senate’s Committee on Universities and Revenue will hold a public hearing Tuesday, Dec. 5, on a bill that would offer protection to many of the state’s student journalists and student media advisers.
