SPLC, SPRC express support for Illinois yearbook criticized for Gaza war quote

A Chicago area school district said Friday that it has “initiated an investigation” into the Glenbrook South High School yearbook, the Etruscan, after the publication of a student’s viewpoint on the war in Gaza sparked a “tremendous number of inquiries and feedback” to the district.

Ahead of a board meeting tonight for Glenbrook Township High School District 225, the Student Press Law Center and the Journalism Education Association’s Scholastic Press Rights Committee sent a letter affirming the student journalists’ role in reflecting various viewpoints among the student body, especially those on sensitive topics.

The letter reminds the district that Illinois’s Speech Rights of Student Journalists Act protects the Etruscan staff’s editorial decisions except in narrowly defined circumstances, none of which are implicated by the published comments.

The letter is below.
