  • Spring 2019 Reporting internship – Interns will report breaking news on complex legal topics with longer-form storytelling on SPLC.org, its social media platforms, and thrice-yearly magazine. Interns will work on multiple stories concurrently. Most will center on the intersection of law, journalism, and education. Interns will help with researching, writing and editing The Report, SPLC’s magazine that chronicles the state of student press rights around the country. Interns will also be expected to use multimedia and social media elements with their stories.

The Associated Press (various locations)

  • Business News Intern (Washington D.C.) – The AP Business News intern will contribute reporting focusing on economics coverage and consumer angles in business news. The intern will receive experience and training in text and video and will attend editorial meetings. The intern will be expected to keep up-to-date on both economics and general business news, track down information, conduct interviews, monitor social media and cover breaking news. The intern will assist in the writing and editing of text stories and video production. They will be expected to pitch multimedia enterprise story ideas and execute at least one during the internship.
  • Data Journalist Intern (Washington D.C.) – The intern will be assigned to either the news applications developers team or the data analysts team. They will be expected to solve problems with code and know how to analyze data. The data journalist intern will work closely with graphic artists, designers, video journalists, text reporters and editors.
  • Editing / Reporting Intern (New York) – The intern’s primary responsibility is to edit content and write headlines for a 10-state region as well as reporting and writing their own stories in the New York City bureau. Reporting responsibilities include conducting interviews, monitoring and using social media to find stories and to promote AP’s content, tracking down user-generated content and covering breaking news stories. Assignments may include general news, sports, business or entertainment.
  • Entertainment News Intern (Los Angeles) – The AP entertainment intern will contribute to AP’s text and video report and will receive experience and training in both, as well as social media production. The intern will attend entertainment events, where they will work with journalists of all formats. The intern will also work with the desk editors and multimedia content for AP’s websites and mobile applications. The intern will be expected to pitch multimedia enterprise story ideas and execute at least one during the internship. The intern will assist in the production of video entertainment stories. Where possible, the intern will accompany staff photographers on assignments, assist with arrangements in the field, and shoot photos.
  • Global News General Assignment Internship (various national and international locations) –  Reporting responsibilities will include conducting interviews, monitoring and using social media to find stories and to promote AP’s content, tracking down user-generated content and covering breaking news stories, either by phone or going to the scene.  Assignments may cover general news, sports, business or entertainment. Interns will assist in the production of video stories, including non-linear editing and writing story summaries and scripts. They will assist in setting up news and feature stories and join staff on location shoots, or do their own shooting.  Interns will have the opportunity to assist with content management and translations. Interns may accompany staff photographers on assignments, assist with arrangements in the field, or shoot photos themselves. Interns who have a background in interactive/graphics may assist in creating multimedia stories told through elements such as graphics, data visualizations, 3D animations, photos, and videos.
  • Health and Science Intern (New York) – The intern will contribute to reporting on a variety of health and science issues. The intern will receive experience and training in text and video and will attend editorial meetings. The intern will be expected to keep up-to-date with news in the area, report, conduct interviews, monitor social media and cover breaking health and science news, either by phone or by going to the scene. The intern will assist in the writing and editing of text stories and video production. They will also be expected to pitch multimedia enterprise story ideas and execute at least one during the internship.
  • Photo / Video Intern (Chicago) –  The intern will focus on still images and video based in Chicago. The AP photo/video intern will contribute to AP’s content and will receive experience and training in still images, video, and social media production. The intern will accompany staff photographers on assignments, assist with arrangements in the field and shoot their own photos.
  • Photo / Video Intern (Mexico) – The internship will focus on still images and video based in Mexico City, Mexico. The AP photo/video intern will contribute to AP’s content and will receive experience and training in still images, video, and social media production. Interns will accompany staff photographers on assignments, assist with arrangements in the field and shoot their own photos.
  • Sports Intern (New York) – The intern will contribute to AP’s content in text, video, images and social media production. The intern will attend sporting events, where they will work with other journalists. The intern will be expected to pitch multimedia enterprise story ideas and execute at least one during the internship. The intern will assist in the production of video sports stories and work closely with photographers on visual storytelling techniques. Where possible, the intern will accompany staff photographers on assignments, assist with arrangements in the field, and shoot photos.

Politico (Albany, NY)

  • Spring 2019 Editorial Internship – Interns will report on the New York State Capital and cover the end of the legislative session, the ongoing operations of state agencies and campaigns for the House of Representatives, New York State Senate and Assembly.  Interns will be involved in research, reporting, writing, editing and news aggregation.

National Public Radio (Washington D.C.)

  • Kroc Fellowship – Fellows will develop audio production and writing skills by working on an NPR program or podcast. Fellows will gain experiences as reporters, writers and storytellers. They will work under the guidance of skilled editors and producers. Fellows will gain first-hand broadcast journalism experience.

Atlantic Media (New York and Washington D.C.)

  • Editorial fellowship – Editorial fellows will contribute to the content produced by Atlantic Media. They will have the opportunity to do reporting, research, video production, and copy editing. They will also work on producing branded content, blogging for Atlantic Media, multimedia editing and working with social media. The fellowship will begin July 2019 and end June 2020.

  • Business fellowship – Business fellows will be trained and participate in the inner workings of Atlantic Media and how the company functions financially. Fellows will have the opportunity to work with business development and sales, communications and public relations. Fellows will gain experience with analytics, data visualization, research, marketing and product management. The fellowship will begin January 2019 and end in December 2019.

  • Summer News internship – Interns help report breaking news about financial markets, economies, technology, business, and governments. Interns will have the opportunity to pitch and write enterprise stories, conduct interviews and collaborate with our other consumer-facing media platforms.

The Boston Globe

  • Summer Intern Program – Interns will work in the news department as general assignment reporters. Other interns will be hired for the sports, living/arts, and business departments. There are also intern positions in the photography department, and on the news copy desk. Interns will research and write articles along with assisting on larger projects and tasks based on the department they are placed in.

Courier Journal (Louisville, KY)

  • Reporting, Producing and Photo/Video Summer 2019 Fellowships – Fellows will work with breaking news, features and enterprise content teams. They will participate in reporting, writing, copy editing, online production assignments, research, database work, investigative work and visual journalism. Fellows will participate in daily news meetings.

CNN (Various Locations)

  • Anderson Cooper 360 Spring 2019 (New York) – Interns will have the opportunity to strengthen their research skills while contributing to the show and participating in daily and meetings. In production, interns will learn how to transcribe tape, dub video, use the various CNN databases, write for air, and work with producers from story inception to finished package. Interns may have the opportunity to accompany producers on stories in the field. Interns will book and greet show guests and assist in basic administrative tasks. Intern’s schedules will vary and shift throughout their internship so they can participate in all aspects of the show.
  • CNN en Espanol Spring 2019 (New York) – Interns will strengthen their research skills and aide reporters and producers in setting up stories. They will work in the bureau and/or in the field on breaking news stories as well as ongoing reporting. Interns have the opportunity to pitch stories and will gain experience at every level of the production process.
  • CNN Espanol Spring 2019 (Washington D.C.) – Interns will become knowledgeable in learning how to set up a show rundown, coordinating with reporters, and searching for show elements using CNN’s database. They will pitch political news stories and log interviews. Interns may book and greet show guests and assist in basic administrative tasks. Interns will possibly have the opportunity to participate in how show ideas are developed, how tape is gathered and edited, the show creation process, and how a newscast is built from an editorial and production perspective.
  • CNN Heroes Spring 2019 (New York) – CNN Heroes interns will be responsible for supporting producers, associate producers and production assistants throughout the production of CNN Heroes packages. Interns will attend all weekly department planning meetings. They will learn to use CNN’s databases to access video, conduct research and communicate with other departments within the company. Main responsibilities include research, logging, transcribing, dubbing, assisting with organizational and administrative tasks and searching for video and sound.
  • CNN Tonight with Don Lemon Spring 2019 (New York) – Interns will contribute to the show and participate in meetings. In production, interns will learn how to transcribe tape, use the various CNN databases, write for air, and work with producers from story inception to finished package. Often, interns book and greet show guests and assist in basic administrative tasks. Intern’s schedules will vary and shift throughout their internship so they can participate in all aspects of the show.
  • Digital Video News Spring 2019 (New York) – Interns will assist with research, planning, and production of original video for all CNN digital platforms. The Video Development Group is split into two primary units, focusing on day turn news and feature content, as well as longer-lead series. This internship position will spend time with both units. Tasks may include pitching and researching stories pegged to news events, helping identify stories that could be included in larger series organized around a main topic, and writing scripts for videos that help put news events in context. Interns will help with coordinating logistics for shoots and going out in the field with producers on shoots.
  • Documentary Unit Spring 2019 (New York) – Interns shadow and assist editorial staff. Basic duties include gathering and dubbing video, transcribing tape, organizing visual elements, basic story research and fact-checking. Interns will have the opportunity to attend local shoots and assist staff.
  • Erin Burnett OutFront Spring 2019 (New York) – Interns on Erin Burnett OutFront will develop research skills while contributing to the show. They help with production needs such as transcribing videotape, assisting in the control room and working with producers from story inception to the on-air segment. Interns book and greet show guests and assist in basic administrative tasks.
  • Investigative Unit Spring 2019 (New York) – Interns will shadow and assist editorial staff. Basic duties include gathering and dubbing video, transcribing tape, organizing visual elements, basic story research and fact-checking. Interns will have the opportunity to attend local shoots and assist staff.
  • Medical Unit Spring 2019 (New York) – Interns will participate in every aspect of television production. They will pitch story ideas and help develop concepts for a longer form series on CNN. Interns shadow and assist editorial staff. Basic duties include gathering and dubbing video, transcribing tape, organizing visual elements, basic story research and fact-checking. Interns will also have the opportunity to attend local shoots and assist edit staff with tape producing. Knowledge of public health and medical content is preferred and experience in the area of medicine is valued greatly.
  • New Day Spring 2019 (New York) – Interns will get experience learning how to build live programming from both an editorial and production perspective. Interns will conduct research and participate in meetings. They will use the various CNN databases to locate footage, tape and sound bites for packages and live air. Interns will accompany producers locally on stories in the field and greet show guests among other opportunities. Interns have the opportunity to participate in video editing and the script-writing process.
  • NY News Bureau Spring 2019 (New York) – Interns will contribute to segments and wires. They will be paired with reporters and producers on both breaking news and ongoing stories. In production, interns will learn how to set up a script with appropriate video and how to write using CNN’s database. Interns learn how to use CNN’s video and photo databases for packages and sound bites for air. Interns may greet show guests and assist in basic administrative tasks. Intern’s schedules vary and may include week and weekend work — morning and evening.
  • Photo Desk Spring 2019 (New York) – Interns will work with the photography department for CNN Digital in addition to developing imagery for larger projects. They will produce photo galleries and essays for CNN Digital and CNN Photos blog. Interns will gather and create relevant images, graphics, and other interactive elements to enhance stories. They will monitor satellite feeds and other sources for the latest video and images available. Interns will perform research to support staff members in producing stories.
  • Video Operations Spring 2019 (New York) – The intern will assist with video equipment management, video workflow improvements and video production.

The Economist – CQ Roll Call (Washington D.C.)

  • Intern – Winter / Spring 2019 – Interns will cover committee markups and hearings and attend policy events around town. They will conduct legislative research and will meet and work with CQ staff members from various departments. Interns will visit Capitol Hill with a CQ reporter.
