Showtime in the Sunshine: Join us Thursday in Miami

After eight months of preparation, Active Voice coordinator Stephanie Leibert and the five inaugural fellowship recipients will be showcasing their work Thursday (April 20) at Miami’s Florida International University.

The Kopenhaver Center sponsors an annual conference on the status of women in media (spoiler alert: not nearly good enough) and a centerpiece of this year’s conference will be a series of end-of-term reports from Active Voice fellows Darlene Aderoju, Nashwa Bawab, Shine Cho, Sophie Gordon and Sindhu Ravuri. They’ll provide updates on their self-designed projects to uplift the voices of young women in their communities and build awareness about the importance of First Amendment rights in schools.

The conference is free to attend and registration information is online here. All events take place in the Wolfe University Center Ballroom, which is on the second floor of the FIU student center at the university’s Biscayne Bay campus. The campus is located at the intersection of Northeast 151st Street and Biscayne Boulevard in North Miami.

Here’s a full schedule of the day’s events, highlighted by a keynote address from Anne Vasquez, chief digital officer at media conglomerate Tronc:
