I’m Beatriz Costa-Lima, one of SPLC’s summer interns. I’m a junior at the University of Missouri majoring in convergence photojournalism.
After years of art school, I thought I was going to be a painter. But I discovered journalism in high school and I found that I preferred notepads and DSLRs to canvases and oil paints.
For over five years I worked in some kind of student media. Most recently I worked at The Maneater student newspaper as city, state and nation editor and as a senior staff photographer, writer and designer.
I’ve also worked with The Visalia Times-Delta, Indianapolis Star, Northwest Indiana Times, Northwest Indiana Post-Tribune and the Ball State University Journalism Workshops, The Missouri Photo Workshop, and True/False Film Festival.
My passion for student press rights began in high school after the state I lived in passed a bill (Indiana HB 1169 and later HB 1015) that would severely limit student first amendment freedom. Since then, the SPLC has been a major resource for me as a student journalist and I’m thrilled to be working with the SPLC staff this summer. Outside of journalism, I making GIFs and playing Scrabble. You can reach me by email, Twitter or at (703) 807-1904 ext. 119.
