Media seek access to athletic director's employment contract

KANSAS — A newspaper and a television station sued the University of Kansas in January for access to the employment contract of athletic director Lew Perkins.

The Lawrence Journal-World and 6News formally requested the information twice under the Kansas Open Records Act. The newspaper and television station requested the contract because they say community members are concerned that Perkins’ total compensation package is said to add up to about $1 million per year.

The media outlets filed suit in Douglas County District Court Jan. 30 after the university denied access, referring to an exemption in state open-records law that protects “individually identifiable information” related to an employee.

The court will hear the case June 25.
