Alumni groups back Syracuse newspaper

NEW YORK — Alumni staffers of The Daily Orange at Syracuse University are putting pressure on the administration to let the newspaper remain independent.

\n Stephen Cohen, founder and president of paper’s alumni association, wrote a letter to Chancellor Kenneth Shaw asking that the administration maintain its commitment to having an independent paper.

\n

\n The Daily Orange has been independent since 1971, but is housed in a university-owned building, for which it pays reduced rent, Cohen said. The issue came up when university spokesman Kevin Morrow questioned why the newspaper operates out of a university-owned house and has free on-campus distribution rights.

\n Editor Tito Bottitta said the newspaper will stay on campus for now, because the cost of moving is too prohibitive. He said 100 alumni signed the letter to Shaw.
