FLORIDA — A high school teacher at Leon High School in Tallahassee is contending that Low Life hit her below the belt.
According to information in an Associated Press article, Rosalind Nims, a teacher at the public school, is suing four former students for allegedly libeling her with racist words and threats in an underground newspaper called Low Life.
The publication, which has been around for about 10 years, is a parody of the school newspaper, High Life.
A paragraph in the paper contained several uses of racist words and threats to kill and rape Ms. Nims, her children and relatives. According to the AP story, Nims stated in the suit, which was filed in October, that the words “severely injured” her.
She also claimed in the suit that she had been held up to “public scandal and disrepute” because of the paragraph, and that one teacher had told her, “I don’t want to get too close to you because I don’t want to be hit by a bullet meant for you.”
State prosecutors reviewed the publication, but decided not to criminally prosecute the students.
