Looking to make a powerful impact on student journalism without affecting your monthly budget? If you are 70½ or older and have a traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA), you are eligible to make a gift from your IRA to the Student Press Law Center. Charitable contributions from your IRA may reduce your taxable income and help you meet a required minimum distribution.
Information on IRA giving:
- Federal law allows people age 70½ or older to be eligible to make a qualified charitable deduction (QCD)
- QCDs are limited to the amount that would otherwise be taxed as ordinary income
- The maximum annual QCD amount per person is $108,000 (as of 2025). This applies to the sum of QCDs made to one or more charities in a calendar year. (If you and your spouse file taxes jointly, your spouse can also make a QCD in the same tax year for up to $108,000.)
- For a QCD to count toward your current year’s required minimum distribution, the funds must come directly from your IRA by Dec. 31.
To make your gift:
- Complete the IRA Sample Letter and contact your IRA custodian and follow their procedures to request a “Qualified Charitable Distribution.” The check must be accompanied by your name and address information for you to receive a written acknowledgement from us.
- Please provide the recipient information below to your custodian, along with our Tax ID 52-1184647. Please direct your check, drawn on your IRA account and made payable to the Student Press Law Center, to:

We also accept QCDs from IRA checkbooks provided by your financial institution.
IRA Beneficiary Designation:
One of the easiest ways to leave your legacy on student journalism is to consider naming SPLC as a beneficiary of your IRA to make a difference after your lifetime. To complete your gift, simply contact your retirement plan or IRA administrator and complete a beneficiary designation form naming SPLC as beneficiary and the percentage you’d like us to receive. Then mail it back to the plan administrator and keep a copy for your records. Please notify SPLC if you intend to include us in your legacy plans.
Please contact our development team at 202-785-5450 or giving@splc.org for more information.
If you prefer to support SPLC in another way, you can donate online or view these other ways to give.
