SPLC in the Classroom

Let us meet you in your classroom or newsroom!

Invite an SPLC legal expert to speak to your class or newsroom via Zoom. Speakers will join you for up to 40 minutes (including Q & A) and can present on one of these topics:

  • Student press freedom (focused on the First Amendment rights of students, and thus mostly applicable to public schools and colleges)
  • Copyright
  • Freedom of Information / public records
  • Libel
  • Covering protests
  • Newsroom Chat: Instead of a formal presentation, invite an SPLC attorney into your virtual newsroom for a 30-minute Q&A session on any media law topic you’d like (censorship, libel, privacy, access, copyright, reporters’ privilege, etc.).

To book a time with an SPLC legal expert, fill out the form at the bottom of this page. In addition, SPLC is also proud to facilitate conversations with Cathy Kuhlmeier:

Book a Chat with Cathy Kuhlmeier!

Cathy talks about her experience as the lead plaintiff in Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier (1988), the landmark Supreme Court case that continues to impact student journalists — and their advisers — to this day. She recounts the events leading up to the case, the fallout of the decision, and some details that have been left out of textbooks. Cathy will discuss her advocacy efforts and how you can get help strengthen student press laws in your state. She will speak for approximately 30 minutes, leaving time to answer questions at the end.
