Rick Hirsch is an award-winning journalist with more than four decades of experience, including 12 years as managing editor of the Miami Herald. 

He currently serves as director of the Collier Prize for State Government Accountability, the nation’s most lucrative journalism award focused on state-related institutions. Housed at the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications, the Collier Prize includes an annual Symposium on investigative reporting, an annual survey of journalists, a quarterly recognition program and a monthly newsletter. 

During his tenure as managing editor, the Herald earned two Pulitzer Prizes and was named a finalist five times. Hirsch also is past president of the Florida Society of News Editors and served eight years on the government board of Campus Communication Inc., the nonprofit that oversees the Independent Florida Alligator.
