The New Voices Matrix was originally created for SPLC staff to keep track of the differences between each individual New Voices state law. With this updated Matrix, we wanted to make it easier than ever for anyone to see the differences between New Voices laws across the country. Hover over any box marked “yes” to see the language from the laws and click on any state name for a full guide.
Please note that laws are only considered to be a New Voices law if it protects public high school student media at a minimum. States like Virginia, which have protected college student media, but not high school student media, are not considered to have passed New Voices and are not on this Matrix.
Want to strengthen the laws in your state, or see your state added to our Matrix? Contact our Advocacy and Organizing Team at newvoices@splc.org to join the movement. For more information on efforts in your state, check out the New Voices state map.
