John Haskins

John Haskins is a member of the Student Press Law Center’s Board of Directors. Meet the rest of the Board.


John Haskins is a news media professional with experience in multiple newsrooms and in higher education.

He was most recently the Dean of Student Affairs, Prizes and Professional Programs at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, overseeing recruiting, admissions, financial aid, student life and careers departments.

Before joining Columbia, he worked in the industry for more than three decades, in four different countries. He served as the director of the New York Times Student Journalism Institute from 2017 to 2020. The Institute, begun in 2003, brought hundreds of university students together to work alongside Times journalists in an intensive summer program each year. 

In his 30 years at The Times, his roles also included chief administrative editor overseeing operations for Times newsrooms in London, Paris and Hong Kong. He was also the managing editor of the Sunday Magazine and T Magazine.

A native of Des Moines, Iowa, and a graduate of the University of Missouri, John began his editing career at The Minneapolis Star Tribune and moved on to Newsday before joining The Times.
