Two bills that would help protect student newspapers in California from censorship and theft are making their way through the California State Legislature.

AB 2581, a bill designed to protect the First Amendment rights of college journalists, passed in a 76-0 vote in the California State Assembly May 11.

The student newspaper at Michigan State University filed a lawsuit May 19 to gain access to a campus police incident report of an alleged assault on campus.

?They enjoy all the same powers and privileges that a local police department would, so I think they need to be held to the same standards,? said Nick Mrozowski, editor in chief of The State News.
