Update from March 9, 2026: Following the letter sent by FAC and SPLC, the El Capitan High School principal told the school community that she was reversing her decision and would restore senior quotes.

With the First Amendment Coalition, the Student Law Press Center sent a letter on Feb. 18 to the principal of El Capitan High School in San Diego urging her to reconsider her decision to ban all senior quotes from the student yearbook.

More than 1,400 people signed an online petition in support of keeping the tradition.

FAC and SPLC note that the decision to remove the quotes violates students’ freedom of speech protected by California Education Code § 48907.
