INDIANA — The Indianapolis Star asked the IndianaCourt of Appeals this week to reverse a judge’s decision thatIndiana University does not have to disclose information and documentssurrounding the firing of former men’s basketball coach Bob Knight.
The Star‘s lawsuit, which was dismissed by a trial courtin November, seeks records having to do with the university’sinvestigation of Knight leading up to his firing. The universitycited state and federal exemptions to the open-records law whenit denied the release of the information. University trustees,campus police and private investigators had generated the records.
The newspaper argued the university waived its right to open-recordsexemptions when it disclosed much of the information in news conferencesannouncing decisions related to Knight’s firing.
Knight was fired in September 2000 after allegedly violatinga zero-tolerance conduct policy imposed by university officials.
