WASHINGTON, D.C. — The House Subcommittee on Postsecondary Education,Training and Life-Long Learning will be hearing testimony July 17 regardingHouse Bill 715, which would close loopholes in federally mandated campuscrime reporting.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. John J. Duncan Jr. (R-Tenn.) and Rep.Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), and 41 co-sponsors, would amend the HigherEducation Act of 1965 to force postsecondary institutions receiving federalmoney to “provide for a more complete, timely and accurate disclosure ofcrime reports and statistics; and to provide for specific methods ofenforcement…”
Specifically, the bill would clarify and add to the Campus SecurityAct of 1990, requiring schools to maintain public campus police logs anddisciplinary records relating to campus crime.
Witnesses expected to present testimony include Crystal Paulk, fromthe Society of Professional Journalists, Ben Clery of Security On Campusand Dan McPherson of Northeastern University.
The hearing will be held at 9:30 a.m. in Room 2175 of the RayburnHouse Office Building.
