New Voices of Texas is a movement to guarantee student journalists in the state the freedom to report without fear of consequence. Right now, there is no added protection against administrative censorship for high school or college journalists and their advisers, leaving them vulnerable to censorship for simply reporting the truth.
Sen. José Rodriguez, D-El Paso, filed Senate Bill 2225 on March 10, the filing deadline for the 2017 session. The bill is considered just a discussion vehicle with little detail, but proponents plan to amend it during the committee process. The bill has the support of the Texas Press Association.
