New Voices of New York is a movement to guarantee student journalists in the state the freedom to report without fear of consequence. Right now, there is no added protection against administrative censorship for high school or college journalists and their advisers, leaving them vulnerable to censorship for simply reporting the truth.
During 2017, Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R-Corning) introduced A8333 to protect the right of high-school journalists to publish the lawful and non-disruptive material of their choosing in school-affiliated media. The bill was referred to the Education Committee and held for consideration at the Assembly’s 2018 session.
