New Voices of Nevada was formed to advocate for heightened free-press protections in colleges and schools, including retaliation protection for educators who advise student media.
Sen. Nicole Cannizzaro (D-Las Vegas) filed Senate Bill 420 on March 20, and the bill was signed into law June 2 by Gov. Sandoval. The bill increases protection for students’ editorial judgement in their media, and prohibits administrations from punishing students or their advisers who have not violated the school’s policy. This bill enshrines the freedom for critical political and social commentary, including criticism targeted at their own school and community but still prohibits unlawful speech such as libel, invasion of privacy, threatening or bullying.
