New Voices of Nebraska is a movement to guarantee college student journalists in the state the freedom to report without fear of consequence. Right now, there is no added protection against administrative censorship for student journalists and their advisers, leaving them vulnerable to censorship for simply reporting the truth.
“College students at public institutions need a free and independent press to address issues which are relevant to students, and a press in which they can place full confidence. … We need to protect the voice of the popular and the unpopular at colleges, where a great deal of intellectual discussion takes place among students, faculty and the like.”
The Nebraska legislature convened on January 6, 2016, and a New Voices bill was filed on January 11. The Nebraska Collegiate Media Association is supporting the bill. To get involved or to learn about the movement, email newvoicesne [at] gmail.com.
