Who is liable for AI-generated content?

Just like any content created by a third party — such as a letter to the editor or a guest opinion column — the moment you choose to republish something in your student publication created by ChatGPT or any other AI content generator, you are legally responsible for it. If the AI-generated material you post is libelous or infringes someone else’s copyright, for example, you cannot avoid liability simply by claiming you didn’t create the content.

Legal questions should be directed toward SPLC’s legal hotline. Featured Legal Questions are selected based on trends in the legal hotline. The legal hotline is confidential and no identifying information will be used in the Featured Legal Questions segment.
