Each month, the Student Press Law Center compiles a list of paid journalism internships. Here are some that are open right now.
Rolling Deadlines
Chicago Magazine — (Chicago)
- Chicago magazine’s editorial department seeks motivated, enthusiastic journalism students and recent graduates to help with fact checking and story research. Interns are also encouraged to pitch ideas and write for various sections of the magazine.
No Listed Deadline
The Bellingham Herald — (Bellingham, Washington)
- Our goals are many. First is to educate and train aspiring journalists in the principles and rigors of their desired profession. Second is to bring new voices to our newsroom to give us fresh perspectives. Third is to put you to work – you will write stories, take photos, make videos and work with social media while you learn. Fourth, this can be a try-out. We are surveying and assessing future journalists either to fill jobs or to recommend to our colleagues in other news organizations around the nation.
The Chautauquan Daily — (Chautauqua, New York)
- The Chautauquan Daily in Chautauqua, N.Y., has an immediate opening for a student news designer for the 2018 Chautauqua Institution summer season, June 12 –Aug. 24. The position is paid and open to undergraduate and graduate students whose studies include visual communication or graphic design, or who have formal design experience, particularly in page design, in a work or classroom setting.
Sightline Media Group — (Washington, DC)
- Looking for solid journalism students with a deep interest in defense, military, enterprise IT, geopolitics and national security issues. Prior military service is a huge plus, and will be strongly preferred. We also seek veterans for a wide variety of full-time roles at our company.
Tegna — (various locations)
- WGRZ– TV — (Buffalo, New York)
- Assignments would include working closely with show producers and news managers to learn how to craft a compelling, modern and sophisticated newscast, and will work with reporters, social media, web, and production staff to promote on-air content and engage viewers.
- WVEC – TV — (Norfolk, Virginia)
- Broadcast internship where interns will produce content for ABC’s affiliate in Norfolk.
- WKYC – TV — (Cleveland, Ohio)
- Broadcast internship where assignments would include working side by side with experienced journalists in storytelling, videography, digital and social media.
Tri-City Herald — (Kennewick, Washington)
- Our goals are many. First is to educate and train aspiring journalists in the principles and rigors of their desired profession. WGBA – TV — (Green Bay, Wisconsin)
- An internship within Broadcast provides students real-world experience and a unique insight into newsroom operations. This includes learning alongside newsroom management, reporters, photographers, producers and assignment desk editors.
