Don’t freak — there are summer journalism internships left

Thought you missed all the deadlines for summer journalism internships? No need to worry — we compiled a list of paid journalism internships and fellowships around the country with deadlines in February. From copy editing to street reporting, here are your options. 

(Note: dates refer to application deadlines.)

C-SPAN — (Washington, DC)

  • You will assist in research, writing and/or production for a specific unit or department, detailed below. This may include learning aspects of print and video production; technical, promotional and public relations techniques or program production. 

February 1

Pennsylvania Legislative Correspondents’ Association — (Harrisburg, PA)

International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors — (Various locations)

  • Interns could be placed anywhere in the country. Those students selected are required to provide their own transportation to and from the newspaper and may need to commute to and from the town in which the newspaper is located. 

The AAAS Minority Science Writers Internship — (Washington, DC)

  • This program places minority students interested in journalism as a career and who want to learn about science writing at Science Magazine for 10 weeks over the summer. Interns experience what it’s like to cover the scientific and technological issues that shape our global community.

February 9

Figliulo & Partners — (New York City, NY)

  • As part of mission to connect brands with consumers in new and innovative ways, we are looking for smart and articulate students to work part-time during the spring Semester. In this role you will spend a great deal of time writing and editing content. 

February 15

Slate (Brooklyn, NY)

  • Slate brings on a video intern in winter, summer, and fall to support our video department. We are seeking experienced editors with visual wit and a deep knowledge of politics and culture.

NBC

The College Fix — (Washington, DC)

  • We will be sending students to serve next to seasoned news veterans in one of the most exciting cities in America for a 10-week experience than begins sometime in June. We will match our interns with an appropriate host organization. Previous fellows have worked at National Review, Real Clear Politics, Daily Caller, The Hill, Reason Magazine, The Washington Examiner, USA Today and The Weekly Standard. 

June Media, Inc. — (Chicago, IL)

  • Editorial interns will be based out of our Chicago office, and will act primarily as content researchers and generators within the department. Editorial interns will be supervised by both junior and senior members of the editorial team. 

February 16

Daily Press — (Hampton Roads, VA)

  • Internships may be filled in several newsroom functions: local news, sports, features, online/digital, editing or visuals. You’ll be assigned real work: Reporting, shooting photos and video, and working online. You will be assigned a mentor and will participate in team meetings and brown bag programs on topical subjects. Past sessions have included journalism values, self-editing, how to read a financial report, investigative reporting and social media uses. 

OZY — (Various locations)

  • Mountain View, CA
    • Reporter intern — Interns will support the staff in a variety of ways, including contributing reporting to major features and playing an active role in marketing.
    • Photo editing intern — Interns will work on numerous tasks assisting our photo editors, including image research, image purchasing and web production. Interns will also have the option to serve as assistants in the field and assist with OZY’s visual presence on social media.
    • Graphic design — You’ll collaborate with the photo, video, editorial and marketing teams. You will also be integrated with our multidisciplinary intern team on a project.
  • New York City, NY
    • Video intern — Interns will work on numerous tasks assisting our video producers, including research, web production, editing and shooting. Interns will be able to serve as PAs or second camera on numerous shoots in the field on a weekly basis. They will also string out rough edits and organize footage. 

February 21

AAJA/NBC News Summer Fellowship — (New York City, NY)

  • The Asian American Journalists Association is pleased to announce our continued partnership with Comcast NBCUniversal for the NBC News Summer Fellows Program! The AAJA/NBC News Summer Fellowship gives students real world experience and exposure to one of the world’s leading News divisions, which includes NBC News, MSNBC and CNBC. 

February 23

Crushh — (New York City, NY)

  • We are looking for a bright and creative intern with strong writing skills to create unique articles for outside publication, our blog and our social media handles. You will mainly write articles from proprietary data we’ve collected, which will reveal truths about texting, dating, relationships, data, technology and psychology that’s available nowhere else. You’ll also have the creative freedom to come up with your own ideas. 

February 27 

American Horticultural Society — (Alexandria, VA)

  • The organization’s official membership magazine is The American Gardener, which is published bimonthly. Editorial interns work with the staff of the magazine, gaining experience in all facets of the editorial and production processes. Primary duties include researching and writing short articles, compiling an event calendar, proofreading and fact-checking, and coordinating author and photographer submissions. Other duties may include photography, website updates, and social media postings. 

February 28

Quartz — (Various locations)

  • Your responsibilities would include pitching stories and taking daily assignments, as well as working on special projects. There are also opportunities to collaborate with reporters on stories, and to contribute to our app. In addition to reporting and writing skills, the ideal candidate will be well versed in global news and trending topics, and will have a strong sense of how to write a headline and frame a story for various social media platforms. 

CBS 

  • San Francisco, CA
    • CNET — The CNET editorial intern will report to the reviews managing editor in San Francisco and assist with news coverage and product reviews. This includes helping to report, research and write breaking news as well as long-form stories, including features, industry analyses and Q&As. The intern would also be expected to write reviews and first takes for phones, VR tech, phone accessories and wearables, as well as appear in reviews and videos. The editorial intern will also help the staff by monitoring competitors’ sites and social media to identify trends and suggest news stories. The goal will be to have our intern get a sense of what it’s like to be a CNET reviews editor. 
    • CNET en Español — The CNET en Español editorial intern will have the chance to contribute to both our written and/or video coverage. CNET en Español provides unvarnished tech advice from CNET.com, presented in Spanish for anyone who loves the language and loves technology. We’ve paid special attention to topics that matter for Spanish speakers in the US and beyond. (Note: Spanish-language abilities must be at a professional, native or advanced level) 
    • CNET Masters Program — The CNET News editorial intern will report to the news editors and assist with news coverage. This includes helping to report, research and write breaking news and long-form journalism, including features, industry analyses, company and personality profiles, Q&As, and financial earnings. The editorial intern will also help the staff by monitoring newswires, competitors’ sites and social media to identify trends and formulate news stories. The goal will be to have our intern get a sense of the complete newsroom experience. (Note: Intern must be a student currently enrolled in a current Masters program at an accredited college or university) 
  • New York City
    • CBS News — This is an educational program designed for students who are interested in pursuing a career in journalism, broadcasting or communication. Assignments vary day-to-day and duties vary in each department. Interns can expect to learn fundamental news-gathering skills, find, confirm and report news stories, greet guests, log tapes, coordinate script, research stories, conduct preliminary interviews, assist during shoots, select footage, perform light clerical duties and assist producers and talent. 
    • CBSNews.com/CBSN — The CBSNews.com editorial intern will report to the hard news desk to assist with updating coverage and “swarming” on breaking news. This includes contributing research to sidebars, producing photo galleries, and tracking down relevant video. Interns will also gain experience in broadcast and digital newsgathering, writing, segment production and spend time inside the control room during their time at CBSN. 
  • Washington, DC
    • CBS News — This is an educational program designed for students who are interested in pursuing a career in journalism, broadcasting or communication. Assignments vary day-to-day and duties vary in each department. Interns can expect to learn fundamental news-gathering skills, find, confirm and report news stories, greet guests, log tapes, coordinate script, research stories, conduct preliminary interviews, assist during shoots, select footage, perform light clerical duties and assist producers and talent. 
  • Louisville, KY
    • TechRepublic — TechRepublic’s 2018 Editorial Intern will act as an assistant to the TechRepublic and Tech Pro Research editorial team and learn first-hand how an online media team works. The intern will support senior editorial staff in all aspects of planning and producing article, gallery, and video content. 

March 2

Student Press Law Center — (Washington, DC)

The Student Press Law Center has two journalism internships for college students and a legal internship for a person in law school. All are paid.

Journalism internships open to undergraduate and graduate students as well as recent college graduates. We need storytellers to chronicle student media organizations in perilous times and help SPLC expand its audience and impact. 

What it takes to be a stand-out candidate: Be a ranking self-starting editor who juggles multiple stories and engages in strategic planning. Have experience in accountability reporting, statehouse coverage, covering campus crime, government and/or school boards/districts. Tell us if you’ve ever filed a Freedom of Information request or dealt with attempts to bar you from a public meeting. Experience with using G Suite (especially Google Docs and Fusion Tables) is a plus. Know A.P. style. Your portfolio should convey that you take complex subjects and break them down into fluid, explanatory news stories.

SPLC offers a summer legal internship for law students interested in careers that involve protecting the First Amendment rights of journalists. Intern duties will include conducting legal research, helping refine legal guides and fact sheets and writing stories for the SPLC.org website. Past legal interns have drafted amicus briefs and conducted survey research. The successful legal intern candidate will demonstrate a commitment to the principles of press freedom, and have studied copyright law and fair use, the Freedom of Information Act and open meetings laws. Applicants should have a background in journalism and superior research and writing skills.
