Paid journalism internships with December deadlines

We’re slightly past the fall’s peak application season, but fear not, procrastinators! There are still plenty of openings for both spring and summer paid internships at newsrooms across the country. Here are some with December deadlines. Get crafting those résumés and cover letters!

DECEMBER 1

The Los Angeles Times Internships (Los Angeles, CA)

  • Website Internship — “Submissions will be accepted for internships in audience engagement, digital editing and production on latimes.com. These are not reporting positions. Web internships do not require a car.”
    • Period: Summer 2018
  • Visualization and Data Internship — “Our expanding Visualization and Data team is on a mission to add diverse skills to our storytelling arsenal, including rich JavaScript visualizations, innovative motion graphics and games — all running on multiple types of devices. And that’s just the start. We’re also preparing for the future by experimenting in WebGL and VR. … You will learn the finer points of mapping and charting as you work your way through multiple assignments. Your experience will culminate in a final, portfolio-worthy project that you conceive of, report and produce.”
    • Period: Summer 2018

Reuters Journalism Fellowship (Various U.S. locations)

  • “Learn at the world’s largest independent, international, multimedia news agency, working alongside our most seasoned journalists and editors. Our paid internships offer first-hand reporting experience on the top business, political and general news reporting on any given day across text and video platforms.”
  • Period: Summer 2018

Overseas Press Club Fellowships (Various international locations)

  • “The Foundation selects up to 12 scholars and pays travel and living expenses for them to spend time at foreign bureaus at such leading news organization as the Associated Press, Reuters, GroundTruth, Wall Street Journal and Forbes and at foreign English-language media companies like the South China Morning Post.”
  • Period: Summer 2018
  • Stipend: $2,000 or funding for overseas experience

American Society of Magazine Editors Internship Program (New York, NY or Washington, D.C.)

  • “ASME interns participate in a three-day orientation program and learn the fundamentals of reporting, fact checking and copy editing. Over the course of the summer, ASME interns attend special events in New York and Washington and meet regularly with top editors. ASME interns report, edit, fact-check and copy-edit for print and online publications. They may sometimes interview celebrities, attend press conferences and work the red carpet—but most of the summer they do the un-glam but essential work of magazine journalism.”
  • Period: Summer 2018
  • Stipend: Minimum Wage

DECEMBER 3

International Radio and Television Society Summer Fellowship Program (New York, NY)

  • “Often referred to as a “media boot camp,” this highly selective program teaches a talented group of up-and-coming communicators the realities of the business world through an all-expense-paid internship in New York City, which includes practical experience and career-planning advice.”
  • Period: Summer 2018

DECEMBER 4

Buzzfeed Emerging Writers Fellowship (New York, NY)

  • “The fellows will focus on personal essay writing, cultural reportage, and criticism. During their time in fellowship, writers will be expected to pitch, report, and write with the added benefit of panel discussions with editors and writers from throughout the industry, and assigned readings. Mentorship within the program will focus on teaching writers how to thrive as freelancers as well as on staff at media organizations; this mentorship will hopefully continue well after the fellowship itself is concluded.”
  • Period: March 2018 – June 2018
  • Stipend: $14,000

American Political Science Association Congressional Fellowship (Washington, D.C.)

  • “Fellows spend the month of November in an intensive orientation where they participate in daily seminars with policy specialists, congressional staffers, scholars, and journalists. After orientation Fellows work in a personal office or committee staff within Congress. Fellows secure their own placements, with guidance from Congressional Fellowship Program staff, by interviewing with the congressional offices of their choice.”
  • Period: November 2018 – August 2019
  • Stipend: $52,500

John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships at Stanford University (Palo Alto, CA)

  • “The JSK Journalism Fellowships supports diverse journalists from around the world who are deeply engaged in exploring solutions to the most urgent issues facing journalism. Innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership in journalism are the foundation of our work, which seeks to improve the quality of news and information reaching the public. … Fellows will spend their time on individual and collaborative projects. Although we are not an academic program, they will have the option to sit in on classes, while also participating in special workshops and weekly events, and exploring the abundant resources on campus and throughout Silicon Valley.”
  • Period: September 2018 – June 2019
  • Stipend: $75,000

DECEMBER 8

Forbes Editorial Intern Program (Jersey City, NJ)

  • “Duties will include reporting, fact-checking and writing stories, as well as assisting staffers with special projects. There will also be opportunities to work on the product development side of the Forbes.com publishing platform to enhance the reader experience with Forbes’ content. Accepted applicants will be assigned to a team—College Rankings, Leadership, Investing, etc.—and will work closely with their corresponding manager.”
  • Period: Summer 2018
  • Stipend: $15/hour

YES! Magazine Solutions Journalism Reporting Internship (Bainbridge Island, WA)

  • “YES! reporting interns are key members of the editorial team. Interns’ primary focus is on article assignments made by our beat editors. Interns will build skills in solutions journalism, including pitching, researching, reporting, and writing. Interns will have ample opportunity to acquire high-quality clips in a variety of subject areas. Interns will also be trained in aspects of print and digital publishing and social media.”
  • Period: Spring 2018
  • Stipend: $1000/month

DECEMBER 10

The Center for Responsive Politics Reporting Internship (Washington, D.C.)

  • “As a news reporting intern, you’ll report and write about how money in the electoral process influences politics and government. Intern responsibilities include writing breaking news items and longer in-depth pieces for the OpenSecrets Blog.”
  • Period: Spring 2018
  • Stipend: $11.50/hour

DECEMBER 15

The Los Angeles Times Internships (Los Angeles, CA)

  • Data Desk Internship — “The Data Desk is a team of reporters and computer programmers that works with journalists in The Times newsroom to collect, organize, analyze and present large amounts of information. In short, we use data to find and tell stories. Stories that make a difference. Stories that otherwise would not be told. We are seeking an applicant with interest and experience doing the same.”
    • Period: Summer 2018
  • Design Internship — “[Work] alongside some of the best designers in the business. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a strong visual sense for page design outside the classroom and have newsroom deadline experience. We’re looking for interns to work in multiple areas of our expansive editorial operation, including News, Features, Sports and Business. Design internships do not require a car.”
    • Period: Summer 2018

Scripps Howard Foundation Journalism Fellowship (Washington, D.C.)

  • “An intensive, 12-month program with the goal of developing a diverse pool of talented, young journalists who will have the foundational skills for future leadership. Starting in June, fellows will work at either Scripps News Washington Bureau/Newsy or ProPublica, focusing on developing expertise in one specialty, while being exposed to all the components of the newsroom. The fellows will come together on three occasions for sessions on career management, leadership/collaboration and the business of journalism/entrepreneurship.”
  • Period: June 2017 – June 2018
  • Stipend: $50,000

Tulsa World Internship (Tulsa, OK)

  • “Our popular News Columnist Ginnie Graham will serve as your intern coordinator. Each week, you will spend time with the top people in each department so you understand the business from the first floor to the eighth. You will learn about digital initiatives, marketing, media law, opinion writing, sports reporting, column writing and much more.”
  • Period: Summer 2018
  • Stipend: $12/hour

Richmond Times-Dispatch Internships (Richmond, VA)

  • “These internships are intended to give qualified college students (generally rising seniors or juniors) real-world experience. … Newsroom interns will report to a department head who assigns daily and weekly duties. … Duties can range from shadowing a staff member to covering a news event for our website and for the next day’s newspaper. In addition to covering daily events for web and print, interns also typically work on a longer-term project – a story or series, a photo essay, a multimedia effort – during their time in Richmond.”

DECEMBER 29

USA Today Editorial Internships (Various U.S. locations)

  • “USA TODAY newsroom interns will work with breaking news, features and enterprise content teams to learn and sharpen basic and advanced journalism skills, handling reporting, writing, editing, copy desk work, online production assignments, research, database work, investigative work and visual journalism. Interns will learn forms of alternative story-telling in a 24/7 deadline-driven newsroom.”
  • Period: Spring 2018 or Summer 2018

DECEMBER 31

National Public Radio Kroc Fellowship (Washington, D.C.)

  • “The NPR Kroc Fellowship identifies and develops a new generation of extraordinary public radio journalists. Over the course of a year, the three Kroc Fellows get rigorous, hands-on training in every aspect of public radio journalism, both on-air and online, including writing, reporting, producing and editing. … The Fellowship is designed to offer exposure to various units at NPR, in both the News and Digital Divisions, and at an NPR Member Station. NPR Kroc Fellows work alongside some of the nation’s most respected reporters, producers and editors and receive regular instruction in writing for radio and on-air performance.”
  • Period: Unspecified dates, one year long
  • Stipend: $40,000
