Journalism internships with November deadlines

Now is the time to be applying for journalism internships and fellowships for spring and summer of 2018. Many news organizations have deadlines in November, so here’s a list to get you started.

NOVEMBER 1

Chicago Magazine Editorial Internship (Chicago)

  • Chicago Magazine’s editorial department seeks motivated, enthusiastic journalism students and recent graduates to help with fact checking and story research. Interns are also encouraged to pitch ideas and write for various sections of the magazine.”

Dow Jones News Fund Internships (Various Locations)

  • Digital Media — “Interns learn the very latest multimedia techniques during a crash course at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University. From analyzing web traffic to social media management and designing responsive websites to creating audio and video content, interns learn how to stay ahead in our rapidly evolving media ecosystem before going to internships around the country.”
  • Data Journalism — “Interns attend a week of training led by journalists from Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) refining skills like making Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, learning computer-assisted reporting and analyzing and cleaning data in order to tell rich, often hidden, stories before starting internships where they apply these skills to issues like education, government, criminal justice and the economy.”
  • Multiplatform Editing — “Interns hone their visual design, headline writing and line editing skills at one-week training sessions on college campuses before beginning internships where they help publish high-quality print and digital content on tight deadlines for some of the nation’s most respected media outlets.”
  • Business Reporting — “Interns enjoy a week in New York City, the world’s financial capital, learning from business journalists and drilling on finance, investing, labor issues and mergers and acquisitions before interning at respected business outlets and digital news services.”

High Country News Editorial Internship/Fellowship (Paonia, CO)

  • “All interns and fellows work with the staff editors to write news stories for the website and for the newsmagazine, ranging in length from 250 to 1,600 words. Depending on their experience and ability, they may also write a 2,500- to 5,000-word feature story. . . Reporting is generally conducted over the phone and the Internet, but we also send interns and fellows into the field to do on-the-ground work.”

Oregonian Media Group Summer Internship 2018 (Portland, OR)

  • “Summer interns are given news and feature assignments just like regular staff members, producing journalism for the OregonLive.com and The Oregonian. We want students who are critical thinkers, who have a portfolio that shows curiosity, ambition and skill across platforms and who are eager to learn more.”

POLITICO Summer 2018 Editorial Fellowship (Rosslyn, VA)

  • “POLITICO seeks exceptional college students/recent graduates for its editorial internship program. We hire year-round for positions on our magazine, our breaking news desk, our politics desk and our Politico Pro policy teams. . .We welcome applicants who are recent graduates. Applicants who are still in school must, at least, be rising juniors. The internship is full-time and based in POLITICO’s Rosslyn, Virginia, headquarters.”

Pulliam Journalism Fellowship

  • The Indianapolis Star (Indianapolis) or The Arizona Republic (Phoenix) — “The Indianapolis Star and The Arizona Republic, Gannett Co. newspapers, are seeking college students and new graduates with a talent for reporting, news design and graphics, or photojournalism for an exciting and demanding journalism fellowship program.”

Reason Burton C. Gray Memorial Internship (Washington, D.C.)

  • “The job includes reporting and writing for Reason and reason.com, helping with research, proofreading, and other tasks. Previous interns have gone on to work at such places as The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, ABC News, and Reason itself.”

San Antonio Express-News Internships (San Antonio, TX)

  • Reporter — “Reporter candidates must specify to which department they are applying: Metro, Features, Business or Sports. Candidates must include links or PDFs of no more than seven stories that best demonstrate an ability to cover breaking news and enterprise. Please include links to any interactive maps, databases or charts used to augment reporting.”
  • Data Visualization — “Data visualization candidates must include links to no more than 10 interactive databases, charts or maps. Candidates who have learned or used Tableau, in addition to other digital tools such as Carto, TimelineJS, StoryMapJS and Storify, are preferred.”
  • Photographer — “Photographer candidates must include a portfolio of no more than 40 photographs that best demonstrate an ability to cover breaking news and enterprise features. Links to personal websites or galleries will be accepted.”
  • Multimedia producer — “Multimedia producer candidates must include links to stories, blog posts or headlines produced. Include up to 10 buzz-worthy ideas, story angles or headlines for current events.”
  • Infographics / Animation — “Infographics / Animation candidates must include links to no more than 10 major print or digital infographics — charts, maps, how-to, how-it-happened, how-it-works.  Expert use of Adobe Illustrator is a must. Previous experience in 3D or animation software is preferred (Tumult Hype in particular), but aptitude and interest to learn at the least.”

Star Tribune Media Company Summer Internship Programs (Minneapolis)

  • Digital Design — “Star Tribune offers a 10-week summer design internship that exposes a developing journalist to digital design across all our content verticals. . .. We provide a real-world experience in a major daily newsroom, a challenging and affirming environment that includes mentors and supervisors, and weekly brown-bag lunch discussions on topics such as investigative reporting, narrative writing and multimedia storytelling.”
  • Reporting — “Star Tribune offers 10-week summer reporting internships. . . We will place reporters in metro, business, features and sports. . .We provide: a real-world experience in a major daily newsroom, a challenging and affirming environment that includes mentors and supervisors, and weekly brown-bag lunch discussions on topics such as investigative reporting, narrative writing and multimedia storytelling.”
  • Print Design — “Star Tribune offers a 10-week summer design internship that exposes a developing journalist to print design in all our sections. We pride ourselves in choosing talented, driven college and graduate students who can design solutions for print (with an eye toward digital) in the whirl of deadline and immerse themselves in a project over a few shifts.” 
  • Visual Journalism — “Star Tribune offers a 10-week summer photography and video internship. We recruit nationally for this program and select talented, driven college and graduate students who can cover breaking news, as well as enterprise stories.”
  • Copy Editing — “Star Tribune offers a 10-week summer copy editing internship. We recruit nationally for this program and select talented, driven college and graduate students who can edit breaking news, enterprise stories and projects.”
  • Digital Producer — “Star Tribune offers a 10-week summer internship with our newsroom digital audience team. . .This producer uses reader-engagement best practices with superior social media, data-visualization and aggregating skills to optimize all content types on the suite of StarTribune.com digital platforms. This producer works closely with digital and social media team members throughout the newsroom to maximize the reach of Star Tribune content.”

Tampa Bay Times Internships (St. Petersburg, FL)

  • The Times offers internships in all of its departments. The internships range from 12-week summer experiences to six-month and year-long jobs. Our interns gain hands-on experience, working alongside staffers who offer guidance and respect them as equals. Interns are paid a weekly salary and also are eligible for scholarships from the Tampa Bay Times Fund.”

The Boston Globe Internships (Boston)

  • “Summer interns work as full-time employees for 12 weeks, between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Interns are paid a weekly wage, and shifts vary. There are weekly critique sessions for the reporting interns, and lively weekly discussions with editors and staff members on a range of issues and topics pertaining to journalism.”

The Buffalo News Internships (Buffalo, NY)

  • Reporter — “Reporting interns cover breaking news and develop enterprise stories. We treat our interns as full-fledged staff reporters and expect them to be able to report accurately and thoroughly and write elegantly and efficiently on deadline.”
  • Digital Editor — “Our digital editors aggressively cover digital news, working with reporters and editors to get stories out quickly and accurately to our readers. In a breaking news situation, that can mean updating an existing story multiple times, compiling a story off reporters’ tweets, or identifying a breaking story and convincing an assigning editor to deploy the troops.”
  • Data Visualization — “As a data visualization intern, you’ll work with a passionate data team to craft engaging data visualizations. In addition to generating daily graphics, you will have the opportunity to pitch and build your own projects. If you enjoy visual information design and translating raw data into a digestible chart, this position is a good fit.”
  • Data Reporter — “We need interns who understand the importance of data, know how to analyze data, and are able to use data to drive their reporting. If filing FOIL requests gets your blood pumping, cleaning dirty data gives you a reason to wake up in the morning, and running queries puts a smile on your face, we want you to join us as a data reporting intern for the summer.”

The Charlotte Observer 2018 Summer Internships (Charlotte, NC)

  • “From Day 1 of your internship, you will be welcomed as part of The Charlotte Observer staff. We expect our interns to function as beginning professionals from their first day: that is, to report or shoot video for stories ready to be edited for digital and print publication.Our summer learning program – Observer U – includes weekly seminars in which experienced reporters and editors discuss such topics such as reporting and writing news stories, researching public documents, shooting video on deadline assignments and understanding libel law. Each intern works with a mentor and can expect regular feedback and side-by-side editing.”

The Chicago Tribune Newsroom Internship Program (Chicago)

  • “Opportunities will be considered in all newsroom departments:  metro, sports, business, graphics, copy editing, design, photo/video, entertainment, events, social media and lifestyle.”

The Los Angeles Times Summer Reporting Internships (Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Sacramento, CA)

  • “We are looking for reporting interns for all news and features departments: Metro/Local, Foreign/National, Sports, Business, Features sections (Home, Image, Travel, Food, Mind & Body), Arts & Entertainment, Editorial Pages and our Sacramento bureau.”

The Los Angeles Times Summer Visual Journalism Internships (Los Angeles, CA)

  • “We are looking for interns to work with our photography and video teams. These are paid internships and summer placements usually run from June to August, with rolling start dates to accommodate school schedules.” 

The New England Center for Investigative Reporting (Boston)

  • “At NECIR, our interns walk away with a thorough understanding of the investigative process, the confidence and ability to conduct public records research, analyze data, and carry out sensitive interviews. For applicants with a background in multimedia or radio broadcasting, we offer them an opportunity to assist in helping us tell our stories in a different medium. We encourage our interns to come with a story they would like to work on and mentor them to help shape the story in an investigative report.”

The Scientist Internship Program (New York)

  • “As an intern you will cover breaking news for our website, produce a variety of articles for the print magazine, manage The Scientist’s social media presence, scan the literature for upcoming studies of interest, and proofread magazine articles.”

The Wall Street Journal Internships

  • Photography (New York) — “The Wall Street Journal is seeking undergraduates, recent graduates or graduate students to intern with its photo team based in New York. The photo team researches and commissions photographs for digital and print editions of The Wall Street Journal.” 
  • Graphics (New York) — “The Wall Street Journal is seeking a graphics intern to work with our team of graphics editors, developers, designers, as well as the broader newsroom. The Graphics department is responsible for driving innovative storytelling with graphics, interactives, data journalism and newsroom apps that are created for digital and print.”
  • Reporting (Various cities in the United States, Canada and Latin America) — “Interns work closely with reporters and editors to deliver prompt, accurate reporting of news relevant to their beat. Interns are expected to generate their own story ideas and follow the stories through to completion with supervision and guidance from an editor.”
  • Video  (New York) — “The video intern’s primary duties will include producing editorially sound and visually compelling content, as well as publishing and promotion of videos both on the WSJ platform and off-platform.”

Washingtonian Editorial Fellowship (Washington, D.C.)

  • “Primary Duties: Fact-checking and research. Enterprising fellows will find many opportunities to pitch and write for the magazine and the website. Will have the opportunity to meet with editors, writers, and heads of department over the course of the program to discuss their roles at the magazine and their careers in journalism.”

NOVEMBER 2

The Valley News Six-Month Photo Internship (West Lebanon, NH)

  • “The photo intern works with the newspaper’s two staff photographers and photo editor, covering a range of assignments and enterprise work. . .The intern is treated as an equal in the newsroom. Interns are expected to be out of the office to find stories, as the rest of the photography staff does.”

NOVEMBER 3

The Seattle Times Summer Internships (Seattle)

  • Digital and Interactive — “The digital intern will work on web and data projects under the supervision of our newsroom interactives team. Applicants can expect a full workload that includes building small and large projects – everything from tools, data visualizations and games, to alternate story forms and creative approaches to long-form narratives. The intern will also have the opportunity to work with our Pulitzer Prize-winning web production team, gaining first-hand experience with the Seattle Times’ digital news tools and homepage production process.”
  • Graphics — The Seattle Times is offering a paid, 10-week summer internship in the News Graphics Department for students pursuing a career in visual journalism. Applicants can expect to have a full workload of daily explanatory graphics aimed for all areas in print and online. Opportunities also exist for our interns to take creative leadership roles in medium and large-scope projects. . .Interns are expected to work under deadline pressure, interact with all members of the newsroom and invest themselves in the entire journalistic process. They attend weekly training sessions given by members of a Pulitzer-Prize winning staff and will receive a skill-development plan and a staff mentor to support them in achieving it.”

The Virginian-Pilot Summer Internships (Norfolk, VA)

  • Reporter — “Produce a regular and compelling mix of stories, including news and features. Expected to be adept at reporting, use of social media and video reporting.”
  • Videographer/photographer — “Cover one or more assignments a day; produce video and still photos. Should be able to capture compelling images that tell a story with accuracy and authenticity, and to gather accurate caption information.”
  • Digital editor — “Create compelling packages of content for online; create basic multimedia graphics and work with content partners across the newsroom. Connect with our audience through social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and SnapChat.”

NOVEMBER 15

Carolina Public Press Reporting or Photojournalism Internship  (Asheville, NC)

  • “Applicants should be highly reliable self-starters with a good eye and ear for news and an innate curiosity about their own backyard and Western North Carolina as a whole. Interns should come expecting to pitch stories, juggle interesting assignments and work a beat in an evolving digital format.”

Kansas City Start Internships (Kansas City, MO)

  • Reporting — “The Kansas City Star is looking for reporting interns for 10-week summer internships. Candidates should be college juniors, seniors or recent graduates. The interns will work 40 hours a week (including occasional nights and weekends) covering breaking news and enterprise stories. We’re looking for reporters who can spot a good story and know how to write it. Video and social media skills also are a must. Past newsroom internship experience preferred.”
  • Audience — “The Kansas City Star is looking for audience interns for the summer of 2018. Candidates should be college juniors, seniors or recent graduates. We are looking for journalists with writing and editing experience under deadline, clear news judgment and strong social media skills. The job will involve collaboration across the newsroom and include writing headlines and social media posts, crafting strong SEO, and some video work.”

NBC Sports Group Spring 2018 Internship (Stamford, CT)

The Wall Street Journal Winter Reporting Internship Covering Science and Health Care (New York, NY)

  • “Interns work closely with reporters and editors to deliver prompt, accurate reporting of science news. Interns write spot stories based on scientific studies; explanatory pieces that analyze science angles related to breaking news; and features that uncover trends in various fields of science from biology to environmental science to nanotechnology, among other projects. Business and Technology Reporting Internship at American Graphics Institute (Boston, MA)

  • “Interns cover technology and business news that relates to publishing, marketing, advertising, and media. We look for journalism students who have a solid foundation in writing and communication, and upon completion of the internship program will have a more comprehensive portfolio along with new skills gained through the summer program. . .Interns will: Work on assignments as well as have opportunities to pitch stories. Provide short-form and long-form writing. Deliver stories on deadline. Collaborate with editors and other subject matter experts. Arrive at the start of the program with clear, proficient writing skills. Present themselves professionally. Participate in professional development with employer-paid courses on the use of tools such as InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere, and Final Cut.”
