Media lawyer Frank LoMonte served for nearly a decade as executive director of the Student Press Law Center. In that role, LoMonte personally responded to nearly 1,000 requests for legal help from journalists and educators throughout the country, and taught educational workshops about the law in some 30 locations from coast to coast each year. A graduate of the University of Georgia School of Law, where he has taught as a Distinguished Visiting Professor, LoMonte practiced law with Atlanta-based Sutherland Asbill & Brennan and served as a law clerk to federal judges on the Northern District of Georgia and the Eleventh Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. Before law school, he was an investigative reporter and political columnist for daily newspapers in Florida and Georgia, covering everything from presidential campaigns to the Olympic Games. He is the lead author of the SPLC’s reference book, Law of the Student Press, and his articles about media-law topics have been widely published in daily newspapers and legal journals including the American University Law Review, the University of North Carolina First Amendment Law Review, and in many other outlets.
