Hello! I’m Jenna Spoont, a sophomore at The George Washington University School of Media & Public Affairs, majoring in journalism and mass communication. I am the news director at WRGW District Radio, the student-run broadcast center on campus. At WRGW, I direct a group of over 25 students for the production of the daily thirty-minute newscast and the composition of articles for WRGWNews.com. Working in college student media encourages me to investigate issues that are pertinent to the University community. I have anchored live coverage of the Student Association elections, written about Vice President Joe Biden’s speech to the students, interviewed the University’s president and his wife, photographed The Fray concert and spoke with the owner of one of the most popular food trucks on campus, Captain Cookie.I am so excited to have a journalism internship at the Student Press Law Center this summer. I support the SPLC’s mission to advocate for the First Amendment rights of student journalists. (I am also the face of SPLC’s curehazelwood.org!) The SPLC was incredibly helpful in high school during my experience on The Spoke, the student newspaper at Conestoga High School in Berwyn, Pa. When I was Managing Editor of The Spoke, I wrote a front-page story about the dangers of tanning. SPLC’s attorneys guided and taught me about my rights as a student journalist to access information.My passion for First Amendment rights increased when I joined 45Words, a select committee of the Journalism Education Association that works to raise awareness of the liberties that Americans might take for granted and strives to empower fellow student journalists to use their voices.My journalistic work in high school culminated when the Journalism Education Association named me the 2013 Student Journalist of the Year. In April, I spoke at the 2014 JEA/NSPA Spring Convention in San Diego in front of 3,000 student journalists and advisers.
