Washington free-expresson bill dies in state Senate

The state Senate’s Judiciary Committee will not hold a hearing on a billcreated to protect public high school and college journalists from censorship,effectively ending its chances of being passed this session.

SPLC View: In the end, it came to down to just one or two statesenators on the judiciary committee who refused to allow the legislation to evenbe considered. That’s a shame. But that’s politics, and the student mediacommunity is simply going to have to get better at playing the game if they hopeto compete with the well-organized, well-connected school administrator lobby.In Washington State, supporters of student free press legislation are learning.And they will be back.
