The Student Press Law Center named Frank LoMonte as its new executive director Oct. 29. He succeeds Mark Goodman, who will leave the SPLC at the end of the year to become Knight Chair in Scholastic Journalism in the School ofJournalism and Mass Communication at Kent State University.

SPLC View: After a run of over 22 years, the Student Press LawCenter will have a new captain at the helm starting in January. The change is, of course, bittersweet. Mark, fresh out of law school in 1985 when he assumed the role of executive director, has taken the Center from pretty much a one-man operation that provided help to several hundred student journalists a year to a full-time and intern staff of about eight that now helps around 2,500 folks a year, produces multiple publications and maintains an active Web site that averages over 5,000 visits a day. He will be sorely missed. On the “sweet side,”Frank brings a fresh perspective and a wealth of enthusiasm that will be crucial as the Center moves into the 21st century, a time when the traditional value and protections society has accorded free speech and a free press appear to be in jeopardy. We hope that over the next several months all of you will join theSPLC staff and board of directors in welcoming Frank to the SPLC family and the student media community.
