A college student journalist and aWashington state legislator are gauging support for a bill that would ensurefree press protections for both high school and college journalists in thestate.
Brian Schraum, a former student at Green River CommunityCollege who is now a student at Washington State University, said he contactedstate Rep. Dave Upthegrove (D-SeaTac) over the summer to talk about proposing astate-wide anti-censorship law after he attempted to propose a policy that wouldprotect student journalists against censorship at GRCC but was turned down byschool officials who cited the Seventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals’decision inHosty v. Carter as the reason for refusing to implement ananti-censorship policy.
