The full U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals is scheduled to onceagain consider the Hosty v. Carter college newspaper censorship case nextmonth in Chicago.
The case arose in 2000 after an administrator atGovernors State University demanded the right to review the content of thestudent newspaper before it went to press and told the newspaper’s printer notto publish future issues without such prior approval. Three student journalistssued the Illinois school and Dean Patricia Carter for violation of theirrights.
In April, a three-judge panel of the Seventh Circuit unanimouslyupheld the students’ claim and refused to dismiss the case. In June, the SeventhCircuit vacated its earlier decision and agreed to rehear the case before alarger panel of judges.
That oral argument has been scheduled for Jan. 8,2004, at 9:30 a.m. at the federal courthouse in Chicago. Cincinnati attorneyRichard Goehler will be presenting the student’s case on behalf of the SPLC and24 other national media and First Amendment organizations.
