CALIFORNIA — State legislators are taking aim at crime reporting by institutions of higher education by considering a bill that would require random audits of campus crime statistics.
\n\n Assembly Bill 2533, sponsored by Assemblywoman Hannah-Beth Jackson, passed the Assembly 75-0 and is headed to the Senate. If passed, the bill would create the California Postsecondary Education Commission, a state agency responsible for auditing two or three institutions a year to determine if their annual campus crime statistics are in compliance with the federal Clery Act.
\n\n The bill would also establish a centralized database of Web links for campus crime statistics and encourage the development of anonymous or confidential reporting programs.
