NEW JERSEY — A bill that restricts the information about students that schools can publish online was signed into law on Jan. 8.
\nThe law requires school districts and the boards of trustees of individual charter schools to get parental consent before placing a student’s name, photograph, address, e-mail address, phone number or the time or location of class trips on the Internet.
\n“The bill only limits what school officials can disclose on official school Web sites,” said SPLC Executive Director Mark Goodman. “The law does not limit the ability of student journalists to publish such information online although I fear that some schools will interpret it that way.”
