ASNE offers summer training program for high school advisers

The American Society of Newspaper Editors is again offeringhigh school teachers and newspaper advisers the opportunity toimprove their skills and learn about the First Amendment rightsof their students in a two-week training program this summer.

New advisers as well as those who would like to update theirknowledge are invited to apply for the ASNE High School JournalismInstitute. The training program will focus on writing, editingand photojournalism, and also include discussions about student-pressfreedoms, ethical dilemmas and the business of running a newspaper.

Transportation, lodging, meals, cost of instruction and graduatecredit hours are provided along with other benefits, thanks toa grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

About 175 high school teachers will be accepted for the programand assigned to the training location closest to their home. Thisyear, five regional programs are planned. They include:

  • University of Texas at Austin — June 16-28
  • Ball State University, Muncie, Ind. — July 7-19
  • Kent State University, Kent, Ohio — July 7-19
  • University of Maryland, College Park, and Hampton University, Hampton, Va. (joint program) — July 14-26
  • University of South Florida, Tampa — July 21-Aug. 2

Applications for the 2002 ASNE High School Journalism Instituteare due on Feb. 18.
