High school punishes students for handing out Columbine-related fliers

TEXAS — Several students at a Hewitt high school weredisciplined in late January after distributing fliers that madereference to the 1999 Columbine High School shooting.

Some of the fliers, which were posted on school bulletin boardsand passed out by students at Midway High School, included picturesof Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, the two Columbine students whokilled 12 classmates, a teacher and themselves.

Citing school safety concerns, Superintendent Randy Albersrefused to comment on the students involved or the punishmentthey received. Midway Principal Sharron Zachry also refused tocomment, saying, "It’s being handled within our own system."

Albers told the Waco Tribune-Herald that the studentsinvolved were disciplined, but no arrests were made because theincident was not considered a "direct threat," whichhe described as a threat made referring to a specific person, group or action.

Zachry called the content of the fliers "inappropriate,"but said that was not the reason the students were disciplined. She said they were disciplined because they did not have priorapproval to distribute the material.
