PENNSYLVANIA — High school athletic associations mustnow adhere to state open-records and open-meetings laws afterthe general assembly passed Act 91 in November.
The act requires the Pennsylvania Interscholastic AthleticAssociation, an organization that oversees high school athleticcompetition, to conform to open-records and open-meetings acts,although Brad Cashman, executive director of the PIAA says theorganization has always had an open-meetings policy, but thatit was never in writing.
"It’s something simply that we’ve codified [as a resultof the act]," Cashman said. He added that the PIAA has alwaysallowed the public to attend its meetings except when its memberswere discussing legal matters.
George Taylor, Pennsylvania School Press Association executivedirector, said he has not heard of student journalists not beingable to attend PIAA meetings.
"We haven’t heard any complaints at all about the PIAA,"he said.
