DOE unveils online crime statistics database

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Prospective and current studentscan now access college and university crime statistics via theDepartment of Education’s Web site.

The site features a new online database that includes informationabout each school’s security office as well as crime statisticsfor criminal offenses, hate offenses and arrests for the pastthree years.

The database, which will eventually include statistics formore than 6,000 colleges and universities, currently containsstatistics for a limited number of schools, including DartmouthCollege, the University of California at Santa Cruz and FairfieldUniversity. The Education Department expects to complete the statisticscollection by mid-October.

The searchable database is available through the DOE’s Officeof Postsecondary Education at http://ope.ed.gov/security/OPEHome.asp.
