WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Federal Trade Commission ruled in May thatcolleges do not have to comply with new federal privacy regulations requiringinstitutions to report their confidentiality policies to the commission.
The FTC said colleges are already ruled by the confidentiality requirementsof the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act-also known as the BuckleyAmendment-which prevents schools from releasing student records that includepersonally identifiable information about students without authorization.
