Kentucky will require colleges to make police logs more open

KENTUCKY — A new state law will require colleges and universitiesto provide more timely and public information about campus crimes startingin September.

Under the MichaelMinger Act, post-secondary institutions must keep an accurate log ofall crimes reported on campus available to the public. The log must beupdated to include crimes within 24 hours after incidents are reported.Schools must also submit an annual crime report to the Kentucky Councilon Postsecondary Education.

The law echoes requirements of the federal Clery Act but imposes strictersanctions on state institutions that fail to comply. Any individual inKentucky who fails to comply with the crime disclosure requirements canbe required to pay a maximum fine of $1,500 or be sentenced to up to 30days in jail, according to Daniel Carter, vice president of of the campuscrime watchdog group Security on Campus.
