A Colorado bill that bans school surveys without parental permission does not apply to student journalists.

But that is only because of some very quick and effective work by Colorado high school advisers and student media supporters. They were successful in convincing lawmakers to agree to an amendment that specifically exempts student media from the legislation.

Among other things, the proposed Colorado legislation requires that any “school or school district employee who requires [student] participation in a survey, analysis, or evaluation” as part of a class or other school activity must first obtain the written consent of the student
