Deadlines Approaching for Student Journalism Award; Scholarship

The Newseum, the interactive museum of news in Arlington, Va., is accepting nominations for its third annual Courage in Student Journalism Awards to Friday, March 31, 2000

The award will go to a deserving middle- or high school journalist and a school administrator who have stood in support of the First Amendment. (The journalist and administrator need not be from the same school.)

The first $5,000 award will be presented to a student journalist who has shown determination, despite difficulty and resistance, in lawfully exercising his or her First Amendment press rights.

A second $5,000 award will be presented to a school administrator who has demonstrated support, under difficult circumstances, for the First Amendment press rights of their schools’ student media.

Also, the Knight Center for Environmental Journalism at Michigan State University is offering a $1,000 scholarship to attend MSU to a high school student who wants to cover environmental issues.
