OREGON — The University of Oregon School of Journalismand Communication is accepting nominations for a new ethics awardto be given to college student journalists. The Payne Award forEthics in Journalism was created to honor journalists who havereported with insight and clarity in the face of political oreconomic pressures.
To be eligible for the award, a student journalist must beenrolled in a two or four-year college when the nominated workwas published. In addition, the nominated work must have beenpublished between January 1, 1999, and December 31, 1999, in aregularly distributed medium, such as a student or professionalnewspaper, magazine, broadcast news program or an edited Internetpublication.
According to the university, the other criteria for the awardare courage, accuracy and fairness in reporting. The chosen studentwill receive a $1,000 prize and will be honored, along with aprofessional journalist and news organization at the annual RuhlSymposium dinner at the University of Oregon in Spring 2000.
