New York high court absolves Internet service providers from content liability

New York’s highest ruled in December that an Internet Service Provider (ISP) was not liable for defamatory content posted by a user since it only acts as a conduit for information and not as a publisher.

Prodigy Services Co. was sued for defamation by the father of a boy scout whose identity was used by an impostor to post vulgar messages on an electronic bulletin board service and to e-mail abusive, threatening and sexually explicit messages to a local scoutmaster.
