OKLAHOMA — A federal court of appeals has thrown out a professor’s challenge to a University of Oklahoma policy that limits the use of Internet discussion groups.The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit ruled in January that Bill Loving, an assistant professor of journalism and an adjunct professor of law, lacked standing because he had not been harmed by the policy.Judge Paul Kelly Jr. wrote in the opinion that Loving did not provide evidence that showed he had suffered any harm as a result of the university1s policy.”He did not establish that he was injured by defendant’s actions, let alone that the injury affected him in a personal and individual manner,” he wrote.Loving sued the university in 1996 after it removed from its campus network about 100 newsgroups that featured sex-related images and discussions. He called the action censorship and said it violated his right to gain access to a public forum.
