Supreme Court asked to review disciplinary records decision

OHIO — Miami University of Ohio has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review a ruling that the university must turn over campus disciplinary records to the student newspaper.

The appeal comes as a result of a decision handed down by the Ohio State Supreme Court in July in the case The Miami Student v. Miami University. The court ruled student newspaper reporters at Miami University of Ohio have the right to see copies of the school’s disciplinary records relating to non-academic offenses.

The school had originally handed over some information regarding campus diciplinary hearings, but information such as the names of involved students, location, time and date of the crime had been deleted.

The court said that by deleting the information the university had improperly withheld information.

The school said that if they released students’ names or information that could in any way identify students, they would violate the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, commonly known as the Buckley Amendment, and risk losing federal education funding of as much as $40 million.
