NORTH CAROLINA — The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student newspaper’s state open meetings law case against the school’s closed disciplinary hearings was argued in December.The Daily Tar Heel filed suit last April after being denied admittance to a case involving two students accused of stealing another campus publication. The newspaper is also requesting information from past hearings and access to future hearings. Currently, only general statistics of university judicial proceedings are made public by the school.A decision in DTH Publishing Corporation v. University of North Carolina had not been reached when the Report went to press.A lawsuit for access to campus judicial proceedings has been won by only one other student newspaper, The Red and Black at the University of Georgia. Many are anxious to see whether the outcome of the Tar Heel’s suit will signal a trend.
